Very Healthy Competition

Kudos to our Bozeman and Missoula communities, who set more records this year in their annual Can the Griz/Can the Cats Food drive competition.  Over 850,000 lbs of food and funds were collected this year between the two communities, with each receiving record donations to their local food banks. Amazing!

MUS Wellness was able to contribute a small portion, as Montana State put together a team for the annual Huffing for Stuffing Thanksgiving Day run. We had 102 members on our team, which turned out to be the largest team in Huffing for Stuffing history! MUS Wellness donated $500 to the Gallatin Valley Food Bank on behalf of our Wellness team.

This is another reminder of how outstanding our Montana communities are! It feels great to live in a place where everyone pulls together to make where we live and work healthier and happier!

Thanks to all who gave, ran, and volunteered!

Turkey Day 10K Rewind

Post race and ready for some hot chocolate!
Post race and ready for some hot chocolate!

We’ve been on the road the past two weeks–Helena, Kalispell, Yellow Bay, and Missoula–meeting a lot of people and also taking in some beautiful sites around the state. I did, however, promise a report from our Thanksgiving 10K (Montana Moves on Turkey Day).  Despite the cold and icy road conditions in Bozeman on Thanksgiving morning, the MUS Wellness team represented with two Top 20 finishes in the Huffing for Stuffing 10K!  Cristin trained hard for the event for the past 8 weeks and it paid off with an impressive performance in her first 10K.

I felt fantastic, I was happy with how it went.  I was surprised by my time because I’ve run races in the past and they haven’t gone as smoothly.  I think the combination of resistance training and running, being on a personalized plan, and not over-training made a huge difference.  I like the 10K distance, and races are a lot more fun than just running on your own—the whole atmosphere and people cheering you on makes it much easier to run six miles and makes you keep going when you think you can’t.

Montana Moves on Turkey Day!

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  Yes, even better than Christmas.  Why?  Well, for starters the weather is nicer than Christmas (maybe more so in my home state of Arkansas than in Montana, but it looks like this week is going to be gorgeous fall weather across much of the state).  Next, I suppose it comes down to the fact that I like food, football, and family, (and more food) which Thanksgiving centers around.   Throw in a four-day weekend and you’ve got yourself a pretty awesome holiday!

So, let’s talk about all that holiday food.  We know we’re going to eat a lot this weekend, and I’m not going to feel bad about it (take that Cristin!).  In fact, I’m looking very much forward to it.  But we can balance it out with a little extra calorie burning, especially on Turkey Day itself.  There are opportunities all across the state to get out and be active in your communities with a Thanksgiving Day running or walking event.  Many of these also use your entry fee to contribute to charities within your community, so that’s one more reason to participate.

The following is a list of Turkey Day events you can find on Run Montana.  If you can’t make it to any of these, set up your own Thanksgiving walk, run, or jog with your family or friends.  It will make you feel better about the extra calories that will be consumed over the weekend.  Stay moving with fun Montana activities all weekend long, and look for Cristin’s upcoming blog about Holiday nutrition strategies to help keep your waistline in-check while still enjoying your holiday.

Cristin and I practice what we preach, and will be participating in the Huffing for Stuffing 10k in Bozeman.  We’ll give you a full report next week!  If you’re in a TurkeyDay event, feel free to drop us a line or picture to wellness@montana.edu to tell us how you did—we’ll report it next week!
